John 1:1-2

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.

As you begin John’s Gospel, sit for a moment with this phrase from John’s explanation of why he wrote his Gospel: “…by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.” (John 20:30) What do you think or how do you feel about John’s statement?

If the phrase stirred any kind of desire in you, consider asking Jesus to use your time in John’s Gospel to grant you your desire.

Now read John 1:1-2 slowly and thoughtfully taking note of any questions that arise for you.

John chooses to represent Jesus as the “Word” (Greek - logos: the defining reason behind the words).

Read John 1:1-2 again with this in mind and if you have any emotional response to what you read, stop to notice it.

Read John 1:1-2 a third time and afterward take a moment to talk to Jesus about anything you thought or felt as you read the passage these three times.

Who is Jesus exactly according to John in these verses?

Who do you believe Jesus to be?

John says that the Word (Jesus) was God. If true, this reality becomes the starting place for faith for every person who ever lived.

Spend at least 60 seconds in silence noticing your breathing and receiving your breath as a gift from Jesus…who is God.

If at any point in this meditation you sensed that Jesus was inviting you to take action of some kind, make a note of it and plan to follow through.
