John 1:14-18
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.
Read John 1:14-18 slowly noticing any words or phrases that stand out to you.
The Word that was spoken at the beginning of time, the Word through whom and for whom all things were created, became a human being who walked the earth he created experiencing what we experience.
Stop for a moment and focus on this phrase: “…the Word became human and made his home among us.”
What do you think or how do you feel about this?
John the Baptist was around six months older than his cousin Jesus, but his testimony about Jesus reveals his understanding of who Jesus really was: “…[he] is far greater than I am…he existed long before me.”
What is your testimony about Jesus? Who do you say that he is?
The Word, Jesus, was full of shalom, full of love, faithfulness, grace and truth. Jesus was and is God revealed to us, and in him we have already received “one gracious blessing after another.”
Stop and consider the “gracious blessings” you have received from Jesus. Express your gratitude to him by finishing the sentence, “Thank you Jesus for…” over and over.
Read John 1:14-18 again letting each thought in the passage sink in.
In your second reading, did anything new stand out to you or did something that you noticed earlier take on a deeper meaning?
The love and faithfulness of Jesus and his gracious blessings are available to anyone who believes. This does not mean we won’t have any difficulties in this life, it means that in the midst of everything, we can rest in the rock-solid love and presence of Jesus.
What gracious blessing do you need to receive from Jesus today?
Take a few moments to talk with Jesus about this and anything else that you thought or felt during today’s meditation. You may sense Jesus nudging you to do something in response. If so, take a first step now.
