John 3:16-21
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.
As you read John 3:16-21 try to read as though you were completely unfamiliar with the well-known opening verse.
“This is how God loved the world…” Stop and let these words sink in.
God provided a way for all humankind to be rescued from the consequences of rebellion. Belief is more than an intellectual exercise it is placing our trust in God’s provision. And God’s provision isn’t just symbolic, God gave Jesus – God in the flesh – so that we could know and experience a relationship with him. This is good news!
When you think of God do you think more about God’s love or God’s judgment? Talk to Jesus about this.
Read John 3:16-21 again focusing in on Jesus’ words about darkness and light.
Jesus speaks these words to a member of the religious elite – Nicodemus - who came to Jesus at night. Just prior to Nicodemus’ after hours visit, Jesus drove merchants and money changers out of the temple and was confronted by a group of religious leaders. These leaders had allowed the corruption of God’s original intent for the temple and were benefitting from the corrupt system in numerous ways, and whether or not Nicodemus was part of the group at the temple, he was one of them by association.
What do you think Jesus was pointing out to Nicodemus with his words about darkness and light?
It is impossible to come close to Jesus and stay in the dark, because as we draw near to Jesus his light shines on the dark and hidden places in our lives. Does this encourage you or perhaps frighten you?
Recall the opening words of this passage: “This is how God loved the world…”
If believing in Jesus means trusting him fully, then we can fully trust that God loves us and wants to free us from that which would harm us. It’s been said, “You’re only as sick as your secrets.” The antidote to the sickness of our secrets is the light of Jesus.
For the rest of this time of meditation, sit in silence in the presence of Jesus and consider asking him to show you any secrets you have that need his healing light. As thoughts come to mind, share them with Jesus and welcome his light into the memory.
This is a spiritual exercise that you may want to repeat from time to time. Just remember, Jesus came not to judge the world but to save the world. If you are welcoming his light, you are welcoming the love of God. Any judgment you feel is not from God, so when you notice it, let it go, and return your gaze to the healing love of Jesus.
