Matthew 20:20-28
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
As you read Matthew 20:20-28, recall that Jesus’ closest followers are accompanying him as he goes “up to Jerusalem.”
It’s possible that James and John, having observed Jesus’ treatment of women, think they might have a better chance of a favorable answer from Jesus by enlisting their mother’s help. But though their mother makes the request, Jesus’ answer is directed right at the two brothers.
“You don’t know what you are asking!”
And indeed they do not. It’s not that they aren’t trying – they seem to have some understanding that Jesus’ path involves suffering and they have decided that they are willing to endure it – but they still haven’t fully understood that the Kingdom of God is not about power and privilege.
Take a few moments to think about the requests you are bringing to Jesus lately. Consider asking Jesus to help you see what you might be missing or misunderstanding. Then listen for a while.
Read Matthew 20:20-28 again focusing on Jesus’ remarks to all the disciples.
Thus far Jesus has taught and explained about the upside-down nature of the Kingdom of God through lessons and parables, but now he lays it out with absolute clarity. Those who desire to lead and have influence in the Kingdom must realize that they are not called to control others but to serve them sacrificially. If Jesus lays down his life for people, then those who claim to follow him will do the same.
Return to the words of Jesus in this passage and listen to them as though Jesus was speaking directly to you:
“You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Allow Jesus to direct your thoughts about this for a while.
What might Jesus be inviting you to do or change today?
What will you do about that?
