Matthew 21:14-17
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
In our last meditation we contemplated Jesus’ initial acts as he entered the temple in Jerusalem. Today’s meditation picks up where we left off. Read Matthew 21:14-17 noticing the symbolic nature of Jesus’ actions.
In the first century temple, blind and lame people are restricted to the outer court – the same area where the moneychangers and dove sellers were exploiting the poor. In “cleansing” the outer court and healing the blind and lame in that same court, the Messiah, Jesus, removes the barriers that keep people from seeking God’s presence in the temple. Blessing flows freely from Jesus as he brings hope to the hopeless and lives out God’s directive to Israel (Genesis 12:2-3).
We no longer have to go to a building to experience the presence of God because the Spirit of Jesus dwells with everyone who follows him. Through Jesus anyone can know God, be blessed by God, and be a blessing to others.
Take a moment to think about the ways we can either be a barrier or a blessing to others. Talk openly with Jesus about this letting him lead you wherever he wants you to go in your thoughts.
Read Matthew 21:14-17 again noticing anything new that stands out.
Even children have a voice in Jesus’ presence, and these innocents understand what the most powerful leaders fail to grasp: Jesus is the Messiah. No longer does he attempt to keep his identity quiet. The time has come for a public declaration and Jesus freely accepts the praise of the children.
For the last few minutes in this time of reflection, contemplate Jesus’ words below in light of his actions in the temple.
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” – Matthew 5:3
“Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.” – Matthew 18:2-4
Share your thoughts with Jesus and listen to him.
What might Jesus want you to do today?
How do you plan to follow through on that?
