Matthew 27:15-19
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
Today we continue with Matthew’s account of Jesus’ trial by the Roman Governor, Pilate. Read Matthew 27:15-19 taking note of anything that stands out to you.
We know from both Mark’s and Luke’s Gospels that Barabbas was a revolutionary who had made several attempts to incite an insurrection against the Roman government – a fact that highlights the ludicrous nature of the accusations against Jesus. Whereas Jesus taught and lived the way of shalom, Jesus Barabbas (his full name) sought a worldly kingdom obtained by force.
Take some time to contemplate these two figures – Jesus, the Son of God, and Jesus Barabbas (the son of Abbas). Ask Jesus to speak to you about the way of shalom and the way of the world represented by each.
As thoughts come, discuss them openly with Jesus.
Read Matthew 27:15-19 again focusing on Pilate’s inner thoughts and his wife’s warning.
Even in the middle of the inevitable events foretold by God through the prophets, Pilate is given a way out. His own reasoning tells him that Jesus is innocent of the accusations leveled against him, and he realizes that to carry out the demands of the crowd he will have to act in opposition to his own understanding. And then Pilate’s wife shares her dream and implores him to let the innocent man go. But Pilate’s fear of a riot is greater than his own moral compass, and his fear of the people is greater than his fear of God.
Stop to consider the ways God guides us: through our reasoning, through our interactions with Scripture, through the Holy Spirit in numerous ways, etc. How are you seeking to cultivate an awareness of God’s guidance, and how have you grown in your ability to hear and follow that guidance even when those around you say otherwise?
For the remainder of your time in meditation today, get still and let all these thoughts settle. Then take time to listen to the Spirit of Jesus.
What do you sense Jesus saying to you today?
How will you respond to him?
