Matthew 28:8-10

As we return to our journey through Matthew’s Gospel, find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

As we continue to observe the two Marys, read Matthew 28:8-10 noting anything that stands out as you read.

Faith involves more than just mental assent. Faith manifests in action. It is not a sense bravery that compels the two Marys to run from the tomb to carry out the angel’s instructions; they are still badly shaken by their encounter with a heavenly being. But they are also “filled with great joy,” and it is this emotion that propels them forward in complete faith that they will soon see Jesus.

The words Matthew uses are key: “…as they went…” They did not build a shrine at the spot of the angelic encounter, nor did they remain idle while discussing and trying to understand everything that had just happened. They went, and because they went, they met Jesus.

Take a moment to meditate on these words from James’ description of true faith:

“What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?” – James 2:14

“Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.” – James 2:26

Think about your own definition of faith and consider the ways your faith is displayed in your actions. Talk openly with Jesus about this.

Read Matthew 28:8-10 again.

Faith paved the way for these women to be the first to encounter the risen Jesus. If they had tried to fully comprehend what was happening, they might never have taken the first steps that led them to Jesus. But they knew Jesus and knew that his purposes were good, and their faith overshadowed any fear or confusion they felt. Because they believed, they became the first human messengers of the Good News.

Stop to meditate on the faith of these women.

Is it possible that Jesus is inviting you to trust him in some endeavor?

Do you believe in his goodness?

How will you respond to him today?
