Matthew 9:9-13

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

In today’s passage, Matthew writes about his own calling and how he called others to meet Jesus as well. Read Matthew 9:9-13 recognizing that Jewish tax collectors were considered traitors and extortionists by their fellow Israelites.

Matthew introduces the story of his calling and then jumps ahead to the dinner he hosts, and this juxtaposition of events again illustrates the fact that the Gospel writers are not seeking to provide an exact transcript of Jesus’ activities. The authors of the Gospels are primarily concerned with creating a clear and compelling picture of who Jesus is.

And Jesus is the great includer. People on the fringes of society are drawn to Jesus because he welcomes them, eats with them, and loves them. The power of Jesus’ welcome and love is such that souls are healed and lives are transformed when people spend time in his presence. Jesus sees people not as much for who they are in the moment, but for who they can be.

Take a moment to let this sink in. When Jesus looks at you, he loves you just as you are, and he sees the person God made you to be. Talk to Jesus about this.

Read Matthew 9:9-13 again paying special attention to Jesus’ answer to the Pharisees.

Following Jesus means living in a dynamic, transformative relationship with him every day of our lives. Spiritual practices, rituals, and even worship gatherings are meant to remind us of this fact and act as vehicles for the Holy Spirit’s work in us. But it’s not uncommon for us to become attached to our vehicles and lose sight of our calling to follow Jesus on his mission of restoration to the world.

For the final minutes of this time of reflection, meditate on these words of Jesus and be alert to anything Jesus might want to say to you through them:

“Healthy people don’t need a doctor – sick people do…Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

Is there something Jesus is inviting you to do today?

How will you respond?
