John 8:12-20
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.
Read John 8:12-20 remembering that just prior to this, Jesus extended mercy to a woman caught in the act of breaking the law and sent her accusers shuffling away in shame.
Jesus declares to the gathered crowd that he is the light of the world, and whoever comes to him in humility and faith can walk in his light. He doesn’t promise that he will show them their destination, nor does he hold out the promise that the road ahead will be easy. Jesus promises that those who follow him will have his light for each step along the way – and his light will lead them to life.
Following Jesus is a step-by-step, moment-by-moment way of living. It’s trusting that he is both light and life and then purposefully maintaining an awareness of his presence.
Where could you use some light for your journey today? Stop to share this with Jesus.
How will you remain aware of Jesus leading you one step at a time? Take a moment to think this over.
Read John 8:12-20 again noticing anything that stands out to you or any questions that arise.
Jesus’ claims in this passage are not left open to debate. He either is who he says he is, or something is deeply wrong. The crowds and the religious leaders must make a choice, as must every person who encounters the claims of Jesus. He is not unclear. The way to know God is to know Jesus.
If you’ve been seeking to know Jesus for who he really is, how have your ideas about God changed?
How are you using Jesus and his teachings as a lens for reading other parts of Scripture?
Take a few moments to consider these questions and talk with Jesus about your answers.
For the last part of your reflection time today, read these words of Jesus over a few times stopping to listen to anything Jesus might want to say to you: “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
If you sense that Jesus is inviting you to a new spiritual practice, or to some kind of action, make a plan to follow through before you move on with your day.
