John 8:48-59
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.
As you read today’s passage, remember that Jesus is speaking to the people in the crowd who do not believe that he is who he says he is. Just prior to today’s passage, he pointed out that those who reject him are not sons of Abraham and do not belong to God.
You may want to look back over John 8:31-47 to see where we are in the story. Then read John 8:48-59 noticing any feelings or questions that arise.
Rather than being cut to the heart and reacting with repentance, those in the crowd who reject Jesus’ claims are outraged and belligerent. They swear at Jesus with the worst words they can think of – racist words that express the dark condition of their hearts. They are so angry that they leap right into the most dangerous of accusations. They actually accuse Jesus, God in the flesh, of being possessed by a demon.
Blasphemy is either claiming to be God when you’re not or showing contempt for God. Stop and let this sink in for a moment.
Read John 8:48-59 again bringing all your thoughts, feelings and questions with you as you read.
Just in case it didn’t register when he said it before (John 8:24), Jesus uses the very words God spoke to Moses about his identity: “I AM.” He is God. He is. No other explanation is needed.
These words encompass the way we need to view and experience Jesus. He is all we need. He is sufficient. He is Lord. He is life. He is light. He is God.
Spend the last minutes of this reflection telling Jesus what you think and feel about him. You can simply finish the sentence, “Jesus, you are…” over and over. Take as much time as you need for this.
As you end this meditation, be still in the presence of Jesus. Consider whether there is a shift that needs to take place in your thinking or behavior. If something comes to mind, talk with Jesus about it and then make a plan to act on it.
