John 9:35-41

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.

Before you read today’s passage, review the story of the healing of the blind man in John 9:1-34. Then read John 9:35-41 imagining you are the person to whom Jesus is talking.

This scene so clearly shows the kindness of Jesus. He does not heal and run; he seeks out the man who has just been banished from the synagogue community and invites him into a deeper understanding. The man is completely open and eager to know his healer, and Jesus is more than willing to be known.

Take a moment or two to meditate on this conversation between Jesus and the man. Imagine Jesus is speaking to you, and consider praying the man’s responses back to Jesus:

“Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

“Who is he, sir? I want to believe in him.”

“You have seen him…and he is speaking to you.”

“Yes, Lord, I believe!”

Before you move on, spend a moment worshipping Jesus. You can simply finish the sentence, “Jesus, you are…” over and over a few times.

Read John 9:35-41 again focusing in on Jesus words to the Pharisees.

In the fifth chapter of John’s Gospel, we heard Jesus say that those who have committed their lives to following Jesus are no longer under judgment (John 5:24), but all of us have blind spots that keep us from becoming all that God wants us to be.

Consider praying a bold prayer today asking Jesus to illuminate the blind spots in your thinking and behavior that are keeping you from knowing him as he is. Most likely, Jesus will answer this prayer over time, so be prepared to watch for his signals and listen to his guidance.

If at any time during this meditation you have sensed Jesus inviting you to an action of some kind, make a plan for following through before you move on with your day.
