Luke 19:28-35
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Take a moment to settle into your surroundings and then begin to recognize your breath. As you breathe in, call on the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
Recall that Jesus just shared a parable to correct the misguided expectations of his followers about what will happen in Jerusalem. Then read Luke 19:28-35 noting anything that stands out to you.
The ways of God’s Kingdom stand in direct opposition to the ways of this world. Power in God’s kingdom comes through humility – not domination - and victory comes through acts of love rather than acts of aggression.
Jesus knows what lies ahead of him in Jerusalem, both because of his knowledge of the prophecies, and because he is completely in tune with God the Father. He is fully aware that his Kingdom is not of this world and that the ushering in of his Kingdom will occur through his sacrificial suffering and death. Knowing all of this he walks with determination toward Jerusalem while his disciples trail behind obviously frightened.
Stop to contemplate the upside-down nature of God’s Kingdom ways. Consider whether it is easier to respond to aggression with aggression or to respond with love. Which takes more strength? Talk this over with Jesus.
Read Luke 19:28-35 again.
Luke gives us only a few details about the acquisition of the donkey’s colt. It’s possible that Jesus knew the owner and made arrangements in advance to borrow the animal. Or perhaps God prepared the owner’s heart and mind to render this service to Jesus. Whichever is the case, the donkey’s owner plays a pivotal part in the events that are about to unfold.
This seemingly insignificant offering will fulfill the ancient prophecy of Zechariah and provide the means of entry for the King of Kings.
“Rejoice, O people of Zion!
Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem!
Look, your king is coming to you.
He is righteous and victorious,
yet he is humble, riding on a donkey—
riding on a donkey’s colt.” – Zechariah 9:9
Get quiet for a moment and let your thoughts settle. Breathe in the name of Jesus and breathe out any distractions or tensions you are carrying.
Consider asking Jesus if there is anything you have that he would like to use for his purposes. Then listen to him.
What might Jesus want you to do today?
How will you respond?
