Matthew 12:46-50

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

In order to gain context for today’s passage, read Mark 3:21-22. Then read Matthew 12:46-50 noting any questions that arise.

Though Jesus’ brother James became an ardent follower after Jesus’ death and resurrection, his family wasn’t always comfortable with the way Jesus went about his ministry. Even Jesus’ mother, who knew his identity, misunderstood him for a time. It’s quite possible that the religious leaders who were so intent on stopping Jesus supplied his family with misinformation that caused them to question Jesus’ actions.

Take a moment to consider whether you have ever had misconceptions about Jesus. Perhaps it was something you were taught or told, or possibly you formed opinions about Jesus based on the example of people who claim to be Christian.

Share your thoughts with Jesus now.

Read Matthew 12:46-50 again with all of this in mind.

Jesus’ family may have been confused about him, but we know that Jesus loved them. At the crucifixion we have a vivid picture of Jesus’ love for his mother when, in the midst of his agony on the cross, Jesus spoke to Mary and provided for her.

There is no scarcity in the love of Jesus – his love is boundless and always multiplying. What today’s passage shows us is that the same selfless, overflowing love Jesus had for his mother is freely available to all who turn towards him and embrace his shalom ways.

John put it this way in his Gospel account:

“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.” – John 15:9-14

Get quiet and center yourself by breathing slowly in and out saying the name of Jesus as you inhale and exhaling any stress or tension you are carrying.

Sit in the presence of Jesus for a while allowing his love to flow into you.

What do you believe Jesus may want you to remember or do based on your time with him today?

How do you plan to follow through?
