Matthew 14:22-27

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

Today’s passage is the continuation of the events that occurred following the death of Jesus’ cousin, John. Read Matthew 14:22-27 remembering that Jesus has just met the physical needs of a massive crowd of Israelites.

Because of Jesus’ unbroken relationship with God the Father, he knows when God is asking him to push beyond his physical and emotional limits, and he knows when God is telling him to rest and be filled up again.

Before you go on, take a minute or two to evaluate the current state of your physical and emotional energy. Picture yourself in front of Jesus and notice your posture. Are you face down? Kneeling? Distracted? Something else?

Now imagine Jesus placing his hand on your head and filling you with energy and blessing. Stay with this image as long as you need.

Read Matthew 14:22-27 again.

In Part Two of this story, Jesus will calm the storm that has these seasoned fishermen fighting for their lives. But as he approaches them through the waves in a manner for which they have no mental framework, they are understandably terrified rather than relieved.

Stop to think about this. At times, Jesus seems a familiar as our closest friend or loved one, but because Jesus is God, at times his ways are a mystery. Share your thoughts with Jesus now.

In all of the chaos, Jesus says: “Don’t be afraid…Take courage. I am here!”

Jesus’ invitation to trust him comes in the middle of the storm and in the midst of fear and confusion.

Get still and let all your thoughts settle. Then when you are ready, imagine Jesus saying these words directly to you:

“Don’t be afraid…Take courage. I am here!”
