Matthew 14:34-36

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

Today’s story occurs just after Jesus’ walk in the waves on the Sea of Galilee. Recall anything you sensed Jesus saying to you over the past couple of meditations and then read Matthew 14:34-36.

Over 400 years before Jesus’ birth, the prophet Malachi wrote these words:

“The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says, ‘The day of judgment is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed—roots, branches, and all. But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings.’”

Because of Malachi’s prophecy, the Israelites believed that when the promised Messiah came to free them, his outstretched “wings” would be a place of healing.

Priestly garments, as well as other articles for worship of the God of Israel, were highly symbolic, and the shawls, or robes, worn by Hebrew priests were carefully crafted according to specific divine instructions. In Deuteronomy 22:12., the Hebrew word for “corners” can also be translated “wings.”

Take a moment to get still and centered. As you breathe deeply take a personal inventory. Is there any part of you that needs physical, spiritual, or emotional healing?

Picture Jesus with his arms outstretched so that his robe, as it drapes across his arms, has the appearance of wings. What do you want to say to him?

Read Matthew 14:34-36 again.

In this story, the crowds of people in the Gennesaret are making a bold statement of faith by bringing the sick and suffering to Jesus. Believing him to be the Messiah, they know that if they are near enough to touch his robe, they will be made whole. And their faith is rewarded time after time as they ones they bring to Jesus find healing in his “wings.”

As you end this time of meditation, consider whether there is someone in your life who desperately needs to be healed in some way. Bring that person to Jesus now in prayer speaking openly and honestly about your hopes for them.

Now get still and listen.

What might Jesus be saying to you today?

What do you plan to do in response?
