Matthew 15:10-14
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
As we continue with the story of Jesus’ encounter with a group of Pharisees in area of Gennesaret, read Matthew 15:10-14 imagining the reactions of these religious leaders as they hear Jesus turn to address the crowd.
The laws God gave to Israel through Moses were not just arbitrary rules to follow. They were meant to create a just and fair society that reflected God’s Kingdom and brought glory to God and blessing to all nations.
But the law was made for people rather than people being made for the law.
The religious elite of Jesus’ day were so intent on getting everyone in line with the letter of the law, that they added several layers of man-made rules to the mix to ensure compliance. But in the process, God’s intent for the law was lost.
Stop for a moment to get settled. Imagine the face of Jesus as you breathe in and out slowly. Don’t try too hard; just picture him as best you can. Try to focus on this image as you let other thoughts drift away.
Now consider this: Is there any possibility that some of the traditional beliefs you hold dear are keeping you from fully following Jesus? Notice your emotional reaction to this question and then discuss it with Jesus.
Read Matthew 15:10-14 again.
Jesus came to restore people and the world to God’s original intent, but the more he revealed of God’s heart, the more enraged the religious leaders became. Ultimately their fury over Jesus’ exposure of their misuse of God’s law would lead them to call for his execution.
God’s truth was embodied in a person and that person was in their midst, but they loved their faulty beliefs more than they longed for God.
Return to silence for a moment or two and just listen for Jesus.
What might Jesus be saying to you or inviting you to do today?
How do you plan to respond to him?
