Matthew 15:29-31

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

We pick up the story today just after Jesus’ encounter with the Canaanite woman. If you haven’t already read Matthew 15:21-28 and then read today’s passage, Matthew 15:29-31.

Jesus’ delighted surprise over the faith of a Gentile woman now becomes a rushing stream of grace as he climbs a hill and sits down to welcome the Gentiles of the area into his ministry of restoration. The result of this torrent of blessing is the fulfillment of God’s call to Abraham in Genesis 12. Jesus is a blessing not just to Israel but to all nations – even the enemies of Israel - and those caught up in this outpouring of mercy and grace respond by praising the God of Israel.

Think back to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and contemplate these words:

“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:43-45

Sit with these words for a moment or two imagining that Jesus is speaking them directly to you. Let the words guide your thoughts while you listen to Jesus.

Read Matthew 15:29-31 again taking note of how Jesus is living out his command in Matthew 5.

Earlier in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said:

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Meditate on these words for a while and discuss anything that comes to mind with Jesus.

Is there something specific that Jesus is saying to you or asking you to do today?

Will you?
