Mark 2:18-22

Read Mark 2:18-22 carefully noting the two illustrations Jesus uses to answer the people.

Ritual practices, like fasting, are simply containers for larger spiritual concepts, but when containers become more important their contents, they are of little use.

In the Old Testament Scriptures, ritual fasting was an indication that something was wrong. Fasting indicated an attitude of mourning and was a symbolic way of confessing guilt or pleading for God’s help. But Jesus embodied all that was right and good, so those who literally lived in his presence had cause for celebration rather than mourning. Sure, the disciples would engage in the spiritual practice of fasting again one day, but not while in the presence of the embodiment of shalom.

Read Mark 2:18-22 again slowly and thoughtfully.

Spiritual practices, or rituals, must produce righteous actions or they are useless. A daily time of Bible reading or prayer that doesn’t change us and motivate us to good works is pointless.

The Kingdom of God that Jesus embodied is dynamic and active. The Kingdom is the reality to which all symbolic rituals and spiritual practices point. The Kingdom is like wine that is transforming and expanding and foaming up, and it requires pliable containers that can be transformed by its presence – the presence of Jesus.

How have you been challenged or changed by your time with Jesus over the past few days?

Have you made any conscious efforts to act differently?

How pliable are you? Take a moment to talk to Jesus about this.

What do you believe Jesus may be inviting you to do as a result of your time with him today?
