John 16:16-24
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.
As you read John 16:16-24 a first time, imagine yourself as one of Jesus’ closest disciples. Imagine the questions you might have in your mind as you listen to Jesus.
Jesus has been preparing his disciples for his physical absence, but much of what he has already said has been a mystery to them. For Jesus’ closest followers this is a time of confusion and loss of equilibrium. They do not and cannot understand what he is telling them. But Jesus patiently continues to explain what’s about to happen while at the same time offering comfort and encouragement to those he loves.
We’ve thought a lot about our questions over the past few meditations. What do you think, or how do you feel about the fact that as long as you live, you will never fully grasp many of the “mysteries” of your faith in Jesus?
Take a moment to get still and picture Jesus patiently explaining, comforting, and encouraging you in the midst of your questions. As you imagine this, notice how you respond to Jesus.
Read John 16:16-24 again paying attention to the progression of events that Jesus is explaining.
The sequence of Jesus’ passion (suffering), death, resurrection and ascension are sometimes referred to as the Paschal (Easter) Mystery. This cycle of death and rebirth is reflected in the seasons as we watch nature become dormant in winter and reborn in spring.
Death and rebirth are also rhythms we experience in our lives as we see hopes and dreams fizzle and die and then be reborn as unexpected blessings or new and refined dreams. It can be helpful when we’re in a time of suffering or waiting to realize that the resurrection of Jesus means that death no longer has the final word. Just as spring emerges from the dead of winter, so new life will emerge from our dead and dying dreams, and if we stay firmly planted in the love of Jesus, we will find joy again.
Take a moment to think about your current circumstances. Are you experiencing a time of sadness or suffering? Have you seen a hope or dream fizzle and die, or are you in a time of waiting? Perhaps you are experiencing great blessing and joy right now.
What do you want to say to Jesus about your current experience?
Listen to Jesus in silence for a minute or two. What do you sense Jesus saying to you about your current experience?
Get still again and listen to Jesus. Is there an action he is prompting you to take right now?
What will you do to follow through?
