John 19:25-27

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.

As you read John 19:25-27, choose one of the people standing near the cross of Jesus and imagine you are seeing and experiencing the scene through his or her eyes.

Though every other follower and disciple of Jesus has run away, these remain. All but one is a woman, and these women, relegated to a subservient place in society, have found their worth in Jesus. Disregarding the danger they remain with him to the end.

Though John does not identify himself by name, it is widely accepted that he is the author of this Gospel. Here at the foot of the cross he stands in solidarity with his beloved leader and the women whose fierce loyalty to Jesus supersedes any fear or sorrow.

As you took on the perspective of one of the people standing near the cross, what did you notice? Share your thoughts and feelings with Jesus.

How has knowing Jesus given you dignity or worth? Talk to him about this now.

Read John 19:25-27 again noticing anything that stands out to you.

Jesus’ death is the culmination of his sacrificial life. On the cross he is taking on the pain and suffering caused by the rebellion of every human who ever lived. As he hangs there in physical agony, he experiences every sorrow and every hurt ever inflicted by one human on another. But in the midst of the enormity of his suffering, he sees his mother and he cares for her.

When Jesus sees someone, he sees them fully. He sees the motives of their hearts and he sees their deepest needs, and he cares.

Stop for a moment to consider that on the cross, Jesus not only took on the consequence of your rebellion against God’s good and perfect way but also experienced every specific hurt and sorrow that you will ever experience. Sit with this for a moment. When you are ready, pour out your thoughts and feelings to Jesus.

If at any time you sense Jesus calling you toward an action of some kind, be sure to follow through.
