Matthew 2:9-12

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

If you haven’t already, read Matthew 2:1-8 before you read today’s passage. Now read Matthew 2:9-12 trying to imagine the thoughts and feelings of the “wise men” from the east.

The wise men, or magi, from the land of Persia were obviously looking for a sign of the Messiah, and when they saw his star they set out in search of him and didn’t stop until they found him. Their response to finding Jesus is unbridled worship, and they have come prepared to offer him their finest treasures.

Centuries earlier the exiled people of Israel were also hoping for the Messiah. God, speaking to them through the prophet Jeremiah, told them how they would find this Messiah – their Deliverer.

Take a moment to read and meditate on the promise of God to the people of Israel living in exile:

“’For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord.”’ – Jeremiah 29:11-14

What might God be saying to you today through this centuries-old prophetic promise?

Read Matthew 2:9-12 again noticing how responsive the magi are to the guidance of God.

When someone truly and wholeheartedly searches for God, they will find Jesus. And as followers of Jesus, our part in that process is simply to stay open to Jesus and quickly respond to his guidance. Then we can allow his blessing to overflow through us to anyone God puts in our path.

The work of drawing people to Jesus is God’s work, and we are simply invited to be part of what God will ultimately do to bring people to Jesus. It doesn’t matter if they look like us, act like us, or even fully believe like us, if they are wholeheartedly searching for God, they will be drawn to Jesus. And if we are listening, we may get to be part of that.

How open and responsive are you to the guidance of God? Talk with Jesus about this for a moment.

Have you ever been given the opportunity to be part of someone’s journey to finding Jesus?

Would you like to have that privilege?

Get quiet for a moment and listen. Do you sense Jesus inviting you to an action of some kind?

What will you do in response?
