Luke 4:31-37

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Take a moment to settle into your surroundings and then begin to recognize your breath. As you breathe in, call on the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

Recall the reaction the people of Nazareth had to Jesus’ teaching. Then read Luke 4:31-37 noting the difference in the way Jesus is received.

The people of Capernaum were also “amazed” at Jesus’ teaching, but in striking contrast to the Nazarenes, they remained open and engaged with Jesus because they recognized the authority in his words. They did not demand anything of Jesus, rather they welcomed him, listened closely to him, and freely received.

Stop to contemplate the idea of Jesus as the ultimate authority on Scripture. How are you welcoming Jesus and listening to him when you read or study the Bible? Talk openly with Jesus about this being sure to listen as much as you speak.

Read Luke 4:31-37 again noticing how Jesus demonstrates his authority.

Jesus doesn’t just sound like someone with authority, he embodies authority. At his command things and people that are broken are made whole. Even the powers of evil are subject to Jesus, and they immediately recognize him as “the Holy One of God.”

The people of Capernaum are fully open to Jesus and their amazement at his teaching never wanes. As a result, Jesus remains with them, and they are privileged to both listen to his life-giving words and experience his restorative power. And this is a model for us as well. The connection between listening to Jesus and experiencing his presence and power in our lives is crucial.

Take some time to contemplate the connection between listening to Jesus and experiencing Jesus’ power in your life. Share your thoughts and questions about this with Jesus and then listen to him.

What is Jesus saying to you today?

What will you do about that?
