John 13:36-38

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.

Read John 13:36-38 keeping in mind that Jesus is on the brink of his arrest and execution and has just begun giving his final instructions to his closest followers.

It’s easy to judge Peter for his question considering all that Jesus has so clearly explained throughout the narrative of John’s Gospel, but it’s often extremely difficult to see past one’s own understanding and expectations. Jesus doesn’t react with judgment or frustration, rather he responds to Peter with love and reassurance. But Peter, full of passionate devotion for his Master, is not satisfied with the idea of passively waiting on Jesus.

Jesus’ reply must sting Peter deeply, but it reveals an important truth that every follower of Jesus must grasp. In our own strength, we are all just one step away from falling. We are all deeply and equally in need of Jesus’ mercy and grace.

Think of a time when you did or said something (or failed to do or say something) that caused you to feel deep shame.

How did you experience the mercy and grace of Jesus? Did that experience increase your dependence on Jesus?

Read John 13:36-38 again, this time adding the very next words of Jesus (John 14:1).

Faith in Jesus is not only necessary for doing great things. When we fall and fail, our trust in Jesus’ unconditional, self-giving love is just as essential. We are all susceptible to denying Jesus with our actions and words – the scandalous reality is that he knows all our weaknesses and loves us still.

Take a few moments and read the following words of Jesus several times over. Imagine his voice as if he were saying these words directly to you:

“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.”

Now be silent and simply listen to Jesus.

What do you sense Jesus saying to you?

What will you do about that?
