John 14:22-26

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.

Today’s passage is the continuation of Jesus’ remarks to his closest followers just before his journey to the cross begins. Read John 14:22-26 noticing his reaction to the question Judas asks.

We have watched over the past few passages as Jesus’ closest followers struggle to understand why Jesus, the one they believe is the Deliverer of Israel, has not laid out the battle plans for overthrowing the oppressive Roman government. Judas’ question coming on the heels of the questions of Peter, Thomas and Philip, is yet another indication that Jesus’ upside-down way of deliverance is still a foreign concept to the disciples. But Jesus doesn’t chastise his followers for their questions, rather he continues lovingly teaching and instructing them.

Take a moment to think about the questions you’ve had about God and faith over the years. Are you comfortable talking to Jesus about your questions? How do you imagine his reaction when you bring him your questions? Talk to him about this for a moment.

Read John 14:22-26 again as if Jesus were speaking directly to you.

The word Jesus uses for “home” in this passage originates from the Greek word ménō which means “to remain” or “to abide.”

There is a deep pull in every human heart for a place of safety and welcome - a place where we are fully known and loved. Home is the state of being where God abides with each of us. Jesus is one with the Father and promises that he will make his home in anyone who loves and obeys him. Where the Holy Spirit of Jesus remains, God abides, and we are home.

Get still and try to identify your longing for home.

Ask Jesus to give you an awareness of his Holy Spirit abiding in you now. Then simply listen.

What do you sense the Holy Spirit saying to you?

What will you do in response?
