John 15:9-17

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. If you haven’t read the Introduction to John’s Gospel, read it here.

In today’s passage, Jesus continues explaining how his new community of followers will change the world through his love. Look back over John 15:1-8 and then read John 15:9-17 noticing how Jesus’ thoughts build on each other.

We remain in Jesus’ love by obeying him – by staying within the boundaries he has set for us just as he always stayed within the boundaries God the Father set for him. In the upside-down math of the Kingdom of God, Jesus’ boundaries do not restrict or stunt our growth. The boundaries established by Jesus energize us and result in multiplication. When we dwell within these boundaries, we experience love and joy that overflows and spills out onto others.

Take a moment to reflect on the last few days or weeks of your life. Where have you experienced joy?

What do you think or how do you feel about dwelling within the boundaries Jesus has set for you? Talk openly to him about this.

Read John 15:9-17 again noticing how Jesus begins and ends this portion of his instruction.

The boundaries established by Jesus are rooted in love. Jesus chose to love us, and we are to love him and love others within the boundaries he has drawn. This is not a linear process but rather an ever-widening spiral of shalom that overflows and restores all things to the way God intended them to be.

Which of Jesus’ words in this passage most fully resonates with you: Obey? Remain? Love? Joy?

Are you experiencing the inward flow of Jesus’ love just now? If not, sit in silence in the presence of Jesus and let his love wash over you.

Now consider the outward flow of from your life to others over the past couple of days. Speak with Jesus about this.

What do you sense Jesus saying to you about this?

Before you end this time, make a plan for receiving and giving Jesus’ love throughout the day today.
