Matthew 24:29-35
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
As we near the end of Jesus’ prophetic discourse, read Matthew 24:29-35 slowly and thoughtfully.
In the sixth century BCE several volcanic eruptions caused a global dust cloud that limited sunlight and caused a worldwide drop in temperatures. The accompanying sickness and despair marked this period as one of the worst in history. But Jesus’ words about the signs that will signal the end of time as we know it point to an even darker period in the human experience when everything will be shaken.
Rather than get caught up in the various ideas about the meaning of Jesus’ prophetic words in this passage, take a moment to get still and recognize what you are feeling after reading Jesus’ prophecy.
Are you anxious? Confused? Angry? Something else? Share these feelings with Jesus and explore them with him in prayer.
Read Matthew 24:29-35 again, but this time be aware of Jesus’ presence with you as you read.
When all is shaking, Jesus is the one constant in our lives. The world can seem to be in total disarray, but if we are centered on Jesus, he will keep us rooted and grounded in his love. And for those who hold fast to Jesus, every ending is a new beginning.
It is good to notice the signs of the times, but rather than lead us to fear and despair, these signs should propel us closer to Jesus and should make us more determined to spread his love and Good News to those around us so they too can be caught up in a life of meaning and purpose – a life that never ends.
Take some time to meditate on the closing words of the New Testament letter from Jude, the brother of James:
“Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single fault. All glory to him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.” - Jude 24-25
Now get quiet and listen to Jesus for a moment.
Is there something Jesus is prompting you to do today?
Will you?
