Matthew 24:45-51

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

Having given a clear call to readiness, Jesus now illustrates the rewards and consequences alertness or the lack thereof. Read Matthew 24:45-51 slowly and thoughtfully.

Besides becoming more aware of God’s presence, what are we to do while waiting for Jesus to return and set things right? In this passage Jesus says that we are to lead and care for others. And we know from his previous teaching that Kingdom leadership means serving others.

Stop to think about the people in your life with whom you have some degree of influence. If you were completely honest, would you say that you are more concerned about what each of these people do for you, or are you more concerned about how you are being a blessing to them and influencing them for good.

Sit with this for a while and share your thoughts openly with Jesus.

Read Matthew 24:45-51 again listening for anything Jesus particularly wants you to hear.

For those who develop an awareness of God’s presence, and then live into God’s purpose for their lives, Jesus’ return will bring unspeakable joy. And along the way as we wait, we will also experience the joy of seeing God work through us to bring life and hope to others as we “feed” them with the blessings of Jesus. It’s a win-win proposition.

For those who never wake to the reality of their purpose, there will be deep regret when the veil of brokenness and confusion is lifted by the light of Jesus. We don’t know when this will happen, or when the events we see around us will signal an end to time as we know it, but our love for Jesus, and Jesus’ extravagant love and grace for us, should compel us to shine brightly in a dark world and to spread Good News and blessing to everyone we encounter.

For the remainder of your time in meditation today, become still and focus on receiving your breath as a gift from God. Breathe in the name of Jesus and breathe out one or two words that express the desire of your soul today. Stay with this as long as you need.

What might Jesus want you to remember or do as a result of his words in today’s passage?

What will you do about that?
