Matthew 25:14-30
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
As we continue exploring what it means to be alert and ready for Jesus’ return, read Matthew 25:14-30 as if you had never heard the story before.
The point of this parable is clearest if we read it with the end in mind. The servant who hid what had been entrusted to him (or her) had an image of the master that neither of the other servants did. This servant obviously did not know or trust the character of the master, and his actions exposed his false ideas.
The other two servants joyfully received what the master entrusted to them and eagerly worked to multiply it. Because they believed the master to be good and just, they trusted in his character and were rewarded both by the results of their efforts and by the pleasure of their master when he returned.
Spend a moment or two telling God what you believe about God’s character. You can simply finish the sentence, “God, you are…” over and over.
Read Matthew 25:14-30 again with these thoughts about God in mind.
The Kingdom of God is a multiplying force, and in great humility, God has entrusted the Kingdom to the followers of Jesus. We know the character of God by observing and knowing Jesus, and the more we know and love Jesus, the more we will be eager to work with him on his mission to restore all things to the way God intended.
Stop to contemplate your own service to God. Does the idea of serving God delight you or stress you? Does serving God seem like a life-giving activity or a hardship?
Talk openly and honestly with Jesus about your thoughts and feelings.
Now spend a moment or two telling Jesus what you think about him. Again, you can simply finish the sentence, “Jesus, you are…” over and over. After some time, get quiet and listen for Jesus’ voice.
What might Jesus be saying to you today?
How will you respond?
