Matthew 26:17-19
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
Today’s passage is tucked in between Judas’ betrayal of Jesus and the story of the Last Supper. Read Matthew 26:17-19 paying attention to the details.
Who is this man who will immediately grasp what Jesus means by “My time has come…”?
Apparently, there were a few people who heard Jesus’ teaching and somehow understood on a deeper level than most. The woman in the home of Simon was one. She was moved to anoint Jesus in preparation for his burial - an event even his closest followers failed to fully comprehend.. And now Jesus points his disciples to another who will eagerly respond at this crucial time for both Jesus and for all of humanity.
Take a moment to center yourself in the presence of Jesus. Allow your thoughts to settle as you become aware of Jesus’ presence with you now.
Consider how you have grown in your ability to hear and understand Jesus over the past few months or years. Share your thoughts about this with him.
Read Matthew 26:17-19 again noting anything that stands out.
We have seen over and over throughout Matthew’s Gospel that many people failed to recognize Jesus as Messiah and rejected his teaching because it did not line up with what they already believed.
To really hear Jesus and understand we must first recognize that we are broken people who don’t have everything figured out - that’s part of what being “poor in spirit” is about.
Once we acknowledge our inability to make sense of life apart from Jesus, we are in a better position to listen without agendas or preconceived notions. Only then can we be become attuned to the deeper call of Jesus and be ready to respond.
Return to silence for a moment and just listen.
What might Jesus be calling you to do today?
How will you answer that call?
