Matthew 26:26-30, Pt 2
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
As we continue exploring Jesus’ words at the Last Supper with his disciples, read Matthew 26:26-30 imagining the surroundings, the aromas, and the sound of Jesus’ voice.
Shortly after the scene in this passage, the body of Jesus will be beaten and hung on an instrument of execution – a Roman cross. The blood of Jesus will be poured out for humanity as he takes upon himself the consequences of human rebellion past, present and future.
The blood of Jesus will eternally serve as a filter through which a holy God can look upon broken and unholy people.
Turn your attention to the second element in this passage: the wine.
“…he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said,
“Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many…””
Meditate on the symbol of wine and share your thoughts with Jesus.
Read Matthew 26:26-30 again with these thoughts in mind.
It is sometimes said that when God looks at people through the filter of Jesus’ blood, God doesn’t see anything but Jesus. But that is not entirely accurate. The blood of Jesus doesn’t obscure our identity, rather Jesus’ blood reveals our true identity before God. When God looks at us through the blood of Jesus, God sees us sinless and perfect – just the way we were created to be. The blood of Jesus erases our guilt and shame and allows our true selves to boldly enter the presence of our perfect and holy God.
Contemplate this thought for a moment and then get quiet and listen to the Holy Spirit of Jesus.
What might Jesus be saying to you today?
What will you do in response?
