Mark 10:17-21
Find a way to separate yourself from whatever’s going on around you so you can fully enter into today’s passage. if you haven’t read the introduction to Mark’s Gospel, read it here.
Read Mark 10:17-21 noticing the reactions of each character in the story: the rich man, Jesus, Jesus’ disciples.
For the rich man, this is a dramatic, fork-in-the-road dilemma. Somehow he heard Jesus’ teaching about eternal life and he wants it, but his earthly life, with all its comforts and benefits, has much too strong a hold on him. When given the choice, he chooses that with which he is familiar even though he seems to understand that it will eventually rob him of the eternal life he seeks.
Each of the disciples also had his or her fork-in-the-road moment with Jesus when he invited them to follow him. They had varying degrees of wealth and lifestyle, but when faced with the choice of the familiar, they chose the adventure of following Jesus.
You may have had a dramatic fork-in-the-road moment when you chose to follow Jesus, or it may have just been a process over time and you can’t even identify a moment when you chose Jesus over your familiar circumstances. But each of us continues to face multiple small choices every day to either cling to what we know or allow Jesus to redirect us.
Read Mark 10:17-21 again focusing in on the reaction of Jesus to the rich man in verse 21.
Do you fully believe that Jesus loves you and wants the very best for you?
Have you felt challenged by anything you’ve read or sensed Jesus saying to you over the past few weeks or months?
Take a few moments to contemplate how Jesus might be calling you to let go of the familiar so you can experience more of him.
What do you need to do right now and throughout the day or weekend to experience the adventure to which Jesus is calling you?
End your time talking openly with Jesus who loves you completely and is fully committed to your transformation.
