Matthew 5:43-48
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
Today’s passage is the apex of the Sermon on the Mount. Read Matthew 5:43-48 keeping in mind that Jesus is teaching about relationships in the Kingdom of God.
Jesus’ teaching is challenging because it goes against the natural inclinations of fallen humanity, and this passage is possibly the most difficult teaching to embrace. Love for family and friends makes sense, but surely those who are hostile toward us don’t deserve our love.
Yet Jesus calls us to the central, defining characteristic of citizens of God’s Kingdom: love for God and for all people. And Jesus makes it very clear that love is not simply a warm feeling; it’s an act of the will.
When we choose love instead of revenge, we reflect the character of Jesus. When we seek good for those who desire evil for us, the image of God shines through us. When we choose to bless instead of curse, we spread shalom to the world.
Take a moment to let this sink in.
Now think of a person with whom you have a difficult relationship. Try praying for this person asking only for good things for them.
Before you move on, share your honest thoughts and feelings with Jesus. Then read Matthew 5:43-48 again with all of this in mind.
You may recall that when God called and commissioned Abraham (Genesis 12), God’s intention was that Abraham and his descendants would bring blessing to “all the families of the earth (Genesis 12:3).” But rather than embrace the call to blessing, the people of Israel became consumed with contempt for their enemies.
Jesus, the perfect Israelite, once again pivots back to God’s original intent for Israel and for all of humanity. Followers of Jesus are to be in the process of becoming “perfect” or “perfected” people who are allowing Jesus to peel back the layers of rebellion from our hearts so we can be the people God intended us to be. We are the image bearers of God who reflect God’s love and blessing to the world.
Think again of the difficult relationship you identified earlier. Is it possible that Jesus might be using this relationship in your own process of becoming “perfected?”
Consider asking Jesus about this and then take a moment to listen to him.
How might Jesus be calling you to love or bless an “enemy?”
How will you respond to Jesus today?
