Matthew 6:24

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

Review Matthew 6:19-23 and think back to what Jesus has been saying to you in our last two meditations. Then read Matthew 6:24 with all of this in mind.

Jesus’ warning about the results of our viewing choices comes between two messages about money and earthly treasure. These three lessons, taken as a whole show the progression of how our use of money can lead us to a focus on either heavenly, shalom things or earthly things that can eventually lead us into darkness in our bodies and souls.

In today’s passage, Jesus presents a stark choice: you can be free by yielding your entire self to God, or you can be a slave to money and consumption. But you can’t have it both ways.

In songs of worship we often sing about giving our whole selves to God. Take a moment to think of the lyrics to a worship song that contains this message. If nothing comes to mind, simply form a sentence something like this: “Lord, I give my whole self to you - body and soul.” Repeat the words you have chosen several times over as a prayer. Then get still and listen.

Read Matthew 6:24 again as if Jesus were speaking the words directly to you.

Now consider taking as much time as you need to examine your own heart in regard to where your desires and loyalties lie. You can use the following questions if they are helpful:

What do I desire most right now?

Is there any area of my life where I feel trapped or held hostage by a financial situation?

What am I most anxious about right now?

End this time of meditation in silence and listening. If you sense Jesus calling you to take action on something, take a first step today.
