Luke 8:9-15
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Take a moment to settle into your surroundings and then begin to recognize your breath. As you breathe in, call on the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
Recall our last meditation on Luke 8:4-8 and then read today’s passage, Luke 8:9-15.
There is an element of mystery in our faith that can be frustrating to logical, western minds. But because God is infinite and we are not, there will always be a gap in our understanding of who God is and what God is saying. The moment we believe we have God figured out, we are further than ever from the truth.
But Jesus tells his disciples that they are permitted to know the “secrets,” (or literally translated, the “mysteries”) of the Kingdom of God. And years later, the Apostle Paul will write that followers of Jesus are able understand the “mystery of God” because they have been given “the mind of Christ” (See 1 Corinthians 2).
But still we understand only in part. Mystery will always remain somewhat mysterious to limited, broken human beings, and that’s what faith is all about.
Get still for a moment and become more aware of the presence of Jesus with you now. Talk with Jesus about the idea of mystery as it relates to your faith and share openly about your comfort level with embracing the mysterious.
Read Luke 8:9-15 again.
The one responsibility of the sower in this parable is – to sow. The seeds fall wherever they will, and in many cases they either don’t take root or the resulting sprouts wither and die. But the sower’s job is just to keep on sowing, not fully knowing what will happen, so that when the seeds hit the right kind of soil they can sprout and grow and multiply.
Think back to the list you made in our last meditation of possible seed scattering opportunities you might encounter during a typical day. Then imagine yourself freely and widely scattering seeds of shalom wherever you go not knowing which will take root. Stay with this image and share your thoughts and feelings with Jesus.
What might Jesus be inviting you to do today?
Will you?
