Why the Gospels?
The Bible is more than a set of principles for life, it’s the story of God’s rescue of a fallen world in partnership with his people through Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the pinnacle of the story as well as the beginning and end of the story. He is the lens through which we interpret and understand everything else.
The Gospels are the hinge on which the arc of Scripture turns, and for a follower of Jesus, they are the defining writings through which all other Scripture must be viewed and understood. These four “books” of the New Testament provide us with personal accounts of the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus.
As we consistently encounter Jesus in the Gospels and allow him to speak for himself, we will come face-to-face with his counter-cultural teaching and begin to view the world and other people through his lens. As we absorb and act on Jesus words, he will become more real to us. And as we grow in companionship with him, Jesus will begin to peel back the layers of our false self to reveal our true identity and purpose. In obvious and subtle ways, Jesus transforms us into the people God created us to be as we spend time with him, follow him, and become more like him.
