Luke 12:32-34
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Take a moment to settle into your surroundings and then begin to recognize your breath. As you breathe in, call on the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
Recall our last three meditations on Luke 12:22-31. Then read Luke 12:32-34 noticing any emotions that arise as you read.
The antidote to worry is two-fold. First it involves a correct understanding of God’s goodness and care, and then it requires generosity. When we share generously to provide the basic needs of others, we free them to experience the life for which they were created, and we open ourselves to receive more of God’s goodness in our own lives. Generosity is a “win” all around.
God yearns to give us the riches of the Kingdom, but if we are holding tightly to our money and possessions, we are not able to receive all that God has for us.
Get still for a moment and think about the things you treasure most. These may be people, or material goods, or accomplishments, or something else. Picture yourself in the presence of God holding tightly to these things. Then picture yourself loosening your grip and offering these to God. What happens next?
Read Luke 12:32-34 again paying attention to anything new that you feel or notice.
Let these words of Jesus sink into your soul for a moment:
“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”
Then meditate on this prayer of Asaph, the psalmist:
“…I still belong to you;
you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
leading me to a glorious destiny.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
I desire you more than anything on earth.
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
but God remains the strength of my heart;
he is mine forever.” – Psalm 73:23-26
Try making these words your own prayer. You may not be able to fully embrace the idea of desiring God more than anything on earth, but pray the words anyway, and consider praying them daily for while until they become true.
What might Jesus be inviting you to do today?
How do you plan to respond to him?
