Luke 18:35-43

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Take a moment to settle into your surroundings and then begin to recognize your breath. As you breathe in, call on the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

Recall our last few meditations in which we saw that giving up earthly comforts and gains for the sake of the Kingdom results in unimaginable gain. Then read Luke 18:35-43 remembering the inability of the disciples to comprehend the facts of Jesus’ impending death.

Luke places this narrative at the end of a series of stories about reliance on God, and it is a powerful illustration of coming empty handed to Jesus. The beggar has almost nothing – no dignity, no social status, probably very few articles of clothing. He is empty-handed in a very real sense.

In Luke’s version of this story the beggar just happens to be positioned on the road as Jesus approaches, and when he learns that Jesus is coming, his hope flames up like a blast furnace. The beggar is desperate to be noticed by this rabbi who has the power to transform lives and circumstances.

Take a moment to imagine the desperation of the blind beggar. Try to feel what he might be feeling. Are there any areas of your life in which you feel desperate?

Imagine that Jesus is approaching you now. How do you react?

Read Luke 18:35-43 again.

The question Jesus asks can become a powerful spiritual practice for us if revisited regularly.

Imagine that Jesus picks you out from a crowd and calls you to come to him. Then notice his face as he asks you this question:

“What do you want me to do for you?”

For the remainder of this time of meditation, share your answer with Jesus. You may find that your first answer is not the truest one, so continue to talk with Jesus being sure to listen as much as you speak.

Is there anything Jesus is prompting you to do in response to this time of reflection?

Will you?
