Luke 19:1-10
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Take a moment to settle into your surroundings and then begin to recognize your breath. As you breathe in, call on the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
Take a moment to recall the story of Jesus conversation with the wealthy religious leader in Luke 18:18-30. Then read today’s passage, Luke 19:1-10.
Nothing is impossible with God, and no one is too far gone to receive the mercy and grace of Jesus. Zacchaeus is not only wealthy - he’s the leading tax collector in the region. He is a traitor to his own people both because of his affiliation with the Roman government and because of his dishonest dealings with his fellow Israelites.
We don’t know if Jesus knew about Zacchaeus or if God simply nudged him to look up into the tree. But Jesus does look and he sees beyond the obvious. He recognizes Zacchaeus’ hungry heart and responds with outrageous grace.
Stop to think about the people in your orbit who seem the least likely to turn from their rebellious ways to follow Jesus. How might Jesus be inviting you to see these people differently? Talk to him about this.
Read Luke 19:1-10 again paying special attention to the effect Jesus’ actions have on Zacchaeus.
There is something about being in the presence of Jesus that causes people to want to lay aside all the broken things in their lives. The vision of a life lived Jesus’ way is so powerful and compelling that after just one meal with Jesus, the notorious sinner is transformed, and the power of greed is vanquished. The camel passes through the eye of the needle and the rich traitor becomes a grateful “true son of Israel.”
Inside the house salvation breaks in, while outside the people grumble. The grace of God, so freely given through Jesus, is scandalous.
Take some time to meditate on the scandalous grace of Jesus that has been freely poured out on you. What powers that held you captive has Jesus vanquished through his presence? Are there still areas of your life that need his presence?
Share openly with Jesus and then get still and listen to him.
What is Jesus saying to you today?
How will you respond?
