Matthew 7:7-11

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

Earlier in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gave his followers a model for prayer. In today’s passage Jesus speaks about how our image of God affects our prayers. Read Matthew 7:7-11 noting any questions that arise or anything that stands out to you.

God doesn’t need our prayers, but we need God, and prayer reminds us of that fact. As we pray and pour out our hearts to God, our perspectives and our desires are transformed. God may or may not give us the exact answer we expect when we persist in our prayers, but what God will undoubtedly do through our seeking and knocking is grow our faith as we experience God more and more.

Do you have a need right now that seems overwhelming or urgent? Take a moment to pour out your heart to God regarding this need. Consider making a commitment to bring this need before God daily for the next 30 days. If you decide to do this, be sure to journal about the experience.

Read Matthew 7:7-11 again picturing yourself as the parent in Jesus’ examples.

Our image of God has a dramatic influence on the way we pray. If we think of God as a mean, vindictive parent who is ready to punish us whenever we go astray, we will have a hard time receiving the good things God has for us. But if we understand God to be the perfect, loving parent, we will be much more likely and able to trust that the answers to our prayers will ultimately be used for good – even when the answer is no.

Stop to identify a time when you were disappointed with God’s answer to your prayers. As honestly as you can, talk to God about the situation. Don’t try to minimize or gloss over your emotions; just speak openly with God about your disappointment.

Now take a moment to consider your view of God. Again, share your thoughts and feelings openly with God, and then be quiet and listen.

What might God be saying to you today?

How will you respond?
