Matthew 7:12

Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.

As we continue learning from Jesus about life in the Kingdom of God, read Matthew 7:12 attempting to “hear” the words as if for the first time.

Many if not most of us grew up hearing some version of the Golden Rule and can easily recite it from memory. But it’s all too easy to nod in agreement and then move on without letting the words permeate our souls and transform us.

Jesus says that all of the Old Testament law and the writings of the prophets are reflected in this simple concept: “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.” This is how relationships in the Kingdom of God work.

Stop to contemplate the last half of the Golden Rule:

“…whatever you would like them to do to you.”

Consider inviting the Holy Spirit to accompany you as you contemplate your innermost desires. How do you long to be treated by other people? What kind of treatment would bring you healing, joy, life? Stay with this for a few moments.

Read Matthew 7:12 again with these thoughts in mind.

It may seem like the Golden Rule lived out would solve every problem of humanity. And that is true, except it would require everyone to find their truest selves and truest desires. Some people are so wounded and emotionally scarred that they mistakenly seek out unhealthy relationships, while other deeply wounded people mask their deepest needs by acting out in ways that damage others. And all of us have emotional wounds that keep us from being in touch with our truest desires to one degree or another.

If we are to live out the Golden Rule, we need to be constantly growing in our relationship with Jesus and allowing his Spirit to reveal our inner wounds so they can be healed by his love and power. This is a lifelong process, but we can begin learning to treat others in ways that heal and bring life right where we are.

Imagine an encounter you might have with another person today. What would it look like for you to treat this person the way you want to be treated? Now imagine a few more possible encounters you might have today and ask yourself the same question.

As you end this time of mediation, get quiet and listen to Jesus for a moment.

What might Jesus be saying to you through his teaching today?

How will you live differently as a result?
