Mark 1:29-34
Read Mark 1:29-34 a couple of times imagining the scene as if you were there.
His secret is out. The once-possessed man stands sane and whole in the synagogue as echoes of the shrieking demon’s revelation of Jesus’ true identity hang in the air. People are bound to come looking for this one who speaks with authority and sets the captive free.
But in this moment, Jesus’ attention and concern are for one his closest followers. Simon leads the way to his own home where his mother-in-law lies in the throes of illness, and Jesus takes her hand to help her sit up. As she rises, she is completely restored to health.
The crowd of hurting, hopeful people finds him at the end of the day, and he restores them all to sanity and well-being.
Read Mark 1:29-34 again with a particular focus on Jesus’ healing of Simon’s mother-in-law.
The Kingdom of God came to the world in Jesus and with it came shalom. How does the complete restoration to health of Simon’s mother-in-law reflect this?
What parts of you need Jesus’ restoration today?
Is Jesus inviting you to take his hand and rise from your circumstances in some way?
Take a moment to talk with Jesus about this as you end this time of reflection.
