Mark 1:35-39

Read Mark 1:35-39 a couple of times noting the perspective of Simon and the others as compared to the perspective of Jesus.

It seems counter-intuitive that Jesus would walk away from his newfound popularity, but that’s exactly what he does. His time alone in conversation with God centers him and keeps his mission laser sharp. Jesus isn’t swayed by popularity or by the expectations of the crowds or even of his closest followers. He takes the time to listen to the voice of his Father above all other voices.

Read Mark 1:35-39 again.

Do you regularly make time to be alone so you can talk with and listen to God?

Prayer is a two-way conversation, but discerning God’s voice can be challenging. How do you think Jesus was able to sort through the voices around him in order to hear God?

It’s been said that God speaks through Scripture, through prayer, by the Holy Spirit through nudges, through other Jesus followers, and through circumstances. Which of these have you experienced?

Circumstances may or may not point us to God’s intentions for us. In what ways can you “test” circumstances to see if God is speaking through them?

Before you end this time of reflection, spend some time with Jesus expressing your desire to hear from God. If you don’t have a burning desire to hear from God, consider asking Jesus to give you that desire.
