Matthew 23:16-22
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
Before you read today’s passage read Moses’ instructions to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 6:10-13. Then read Matthew 23:16-22.
In the opening chapters of Genesis, just after the first humans rebelled against God’s good and perfect ways, God asked the terrified humans two questions: “Where are you?” and “Who told you that…?” The first question illustrates the heart of a God who continually pursues us even in our rebellion, and the second can point us to clarity anytime we are unsure of the truth.
The religious authorities of the first century either inherited or created a complex oath-taking system that allowed plenty of wiggle room. But in this warning, Jesus easily dismantles their convoluted rules and brings them back to the truth.
Take a moment to become still and centered in the presence of Jesus. When you feel ready, consider how tightly you hold onto your religious practices and beliefs. Are you open to hearing God’s question, “Who told you that…”?
Read Matthew 23:16-22 again noting how Jesus drills down through the layers of the man-made system.
Earlier in Matthew’s Gospel Jesus redefined the whole Mosaic notion of oath-taking. Take a moment to meditate on these words of Jesus from his Sermon on the Mount:
“You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the Lord.’ But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven!’ because heaven is God’s throne. And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King. Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”- Matthew 5:33-37
Truth is important because truth is embodied in Jesus. Followers of Jesus are not slaves to an elaborate system of rules, practices and regulations, they are free to grow in their understanding of truth as they learn to recognize the voice of Jesus more and more and then respond to the truth as revealed by Jesus.
Return to silence for a moment or two and sit humbly in Jesus’ presence.
What is Jesus saying to you today?
What will you do about that?
