Matthew 23:23-26
Find a place and time free of distractions for the next 7-10 minutes. Sit comfortably and breathe deeply for a few seconds before you begin. As you breathe in, say the name of Jesus and become aware of his presence with you. As you breathe out, open your mind and heart to receive whatever Jesus has for you today.
As we continue using Jesus’ warnings to the religious authorities as a searchlight for our own souls, read Matthew 23:23-26 prayerfully.
Going through the motions of religiosity is a waste of time if we aren’t tuned into the deeper purposes of our faith. If we are truly being transformed, we won’t just appear to be religious, our lives will actually begin to reflect that which is “more important” than mere appearances.
Take a moment to consider how you are growing in the three important aspects of faith that Jesus points out:
Justice – How are you growing in your ability to discern between justice and injustice as exemplified by Jesus’ teachings and dealings with people?
Mercy – Are you growing in your compassion towards other people – even those you disagree with?
Faith – Are you learning to trust Jesus more and more to be your guide as you navigate your life and relationships?
Read Matthew 23:23-36 again focusing in on Jesus’ words about the outside and inside of the cup.
We all have moments when we are not our best selves, but if we are staying close to Jesus our words and actions will begin to change and become less greedy and self-indulgent. It’s not that Jesus will change us into generous, caring people without any effort on our part, it’s just that our part is to show up to be with Jesus and then respond to what he says both in our personal time with him and when we are out in the world living our lives. The only one capable of cleaning the inside of the cup is Jesus.
Recall this conversation between Jesus and Peter from Matthew 15:
Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”
“Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked. “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.” - Matthew 15:15-20
For the final minutes of this time of reflection get still and listen to Jesus.
What might Jesus be prompting you to do today?
How will you respond?
